July is the time when the fireworks begin, thunderstorms can roll in at night and dogs can become anxious and scared. When our furry friends become scared by noises, there is potential for dogs to cause harm to themselves and others. Sileo (meaning "to be silent" in Latin) is a product developed by Orion Corporation and distributed by Zoetis, specifically for dogs with noise aversion. When dogs suffer from noise aversion they can show symptoms during events of fireworks and thunderstoms such as pacing/restlessness, lip licking, trembling, panting, cowering, hiding, freezing/immobility, clinginess, refusal to eat, yawning and vocalizing. According to Zoetis's* website, "At least one-third of dogs in the United States have noise aversion. Dogs experiencing noise aversion are distressed and suffering. They can damage property, injure themselves or escape. The suffering associated with self-inflicted trauma is readily recognized, but the physiological and emotional toll experienced by dogs with less obvious signs of noise aversion is often overlooked." With July 4th and our own Utah holiday, Pioneer Day, approaching, there is great potential for dogs to become stressed and nervous due to the noise from fireworks. To help them and their owners, this product alleviates noise anxiety by calming the dog without sedating, which means they will have normal interactions with their owners. However, Sileo isn't just for events such as fireworks and thunderstorms. Does your dog suffer from noise aversion due to traffic? Construction work? Loud noise from parties or celebrations? Talk to your vet about using Sileo for cases like these! Sileo is the first and only FDA-approved treatment you can use at home for noise aversion in dogs and is clinically proven to be safe and effective without other treatments. It is fast-acting and can be used as needed for each noise event. If you have a dog that gets very nervous and scared during storms and fireworks, or displays some of the common behaviors shown in the picture below, give us a call to set up an appointment to discuss this product with one of our doctors.
Sileo is a prescription, therefore we will need to see your pet to prescribe this. If you have any questions please call our clinic at 801-782-4401.

If you have a large un-leashed dog approaching you and your small leashed dogs, I'm not sure which dogs the horn will terrify most.

Love this post. I have kids and a dog.. and on top of that I am interior designer that is OCD! But my puppy needs to be inside and be a part of the family. Hence no white linen sofa.

I like that you also include information on what’s actually in the recipe – makes it super easy to understand and it’s reassuring to be able to make your own and know what you’re giving your pet. When we get treats from in stores, I spend a solid few minutes looking over the ingredients to make sure…so it’s nice to know maybe making my own treats (for our cats) could be easier than I thought.

Great article! I didn’t know that a yawn from a dog can be a sign of empty and love. I often wonder whether Riggers, my dog would miss me if I were gone, or she would only miss the food I give her :) I saw her yawn several times after I did so, which gives me a little bit of solace.

You made my day reading this. Shelter dogs are wonderful. and yes you certainly can get a purebred if thats what you have your mind st on as some who have bought a purebred and found they werent fitting onto their lifestyle . I have known a number of people who have ‘bought ‘ (it makes me shudder) a dog and they find out the breed is prey driven or perhaps is very high strung. Also buying a dog you are never sure if i involves a puppy mill.

I love this idea! I always make portabello “burgers” but I love the idea of slicing them lengthwise and making them hot dogs. Adorable, fun and so delicious. Thanks for the great idea!

The presence of costumed people can easily scare animals and with the door constantly opening, many get loose and run away.

Most people in lieu of adopting a pet will not adopt a starving child, or divert every disposable dollar to children’s charities. But, it makes a huge difference to the life of that one adopted animal to come to a loving home.

The first phase the preparation should, theoretically, be uninfluenced by the intended intensity and duration of the sound which is subsequently produced. In fact, however, so quickly are the three phases accomplished that the pianist rarely has capacity to think, in performance, of each phase separately.
